What is a mouthguard?

Mouthguards are a custom-made oral orthotic which is used mostly during the night but sometimes may require to be used during the day as well. The type of mouthguard depends on your symptoms and diagnosis. If your problems are more related to grinding or clenching, we may recommend a mouthguard that separates your back teeth, giving your teeth and muscles the rest they lack when they are constantly rubbing against each other. Wearing your mouthguard can alleviate the painful side effects of the clenching and grinding.

Types of mouthguards and splints

Dual Arch B-Splint

This appliance is indicated for patients that grind or clench their teeth, causing excessive tooth wear, fractures and muscle tenderness. This appliance covers both arches in the mouth and separate the back teeth, only leaving the front teeth touching. The splint is made out of hard acrylic, making it very durable and resistant to wear and fractures.

Superior Repositioning Splint (SRS)

The SRS is a great appliance used to help position your joint in the most comfortable position. This splint is usually used on patient with temporomandibular joint problems. It is made out of hard acrylic, and it can be fabricated for either the upper or lower arch.

Anterior Repositioning Splint (ARS)

The ARS splint positions your lower jaw in a forward position. This splint is mostly used after injury or trauma to the temporomandibular joint to relieve the pain and pressure on the damaged joint. Also, by moving the jaw forward, it can also open the airway, so sometimes it may be used to help patients breath better at night. The splint is made out of hard acrylic and usually done for the upper arch.

Our Difference

Advanced Tools for Precise Care

While traditional x-rays provide 2-dimensional images, our Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) can capture a 360 view of your jaw, teeth, and mouth. This unparalleled precision allows your dentist to provide the most accurate diagnosis for your unique condition.

Splints & Orthotics

Splints or orthotics are custom-made appliances designed to address specific dental and jaw concerns. Because every patient’s needs are different, there are various types crafted for different conditions and goals. Some appliances are worn only at night, while others may need to be worn during the day for a period of time to achieve the best results. Our team will guide you on the right option and schedule to ensure your treatment is effective and comfortable.

Goop-Free Impressions

With our digital scanner, your dentist can take a non-invasive 3D scan that captures the form and structure of your mouth for custom-fit night guards. It’s a fully digital process — no putty necessary.

How it works: The mouthguard treatment process

Consultation

At your consultation, your dentist will complete a thorough examination which include evaluating your teeth, your temporomandibular joints and your airway to determine if splint therapy is right for you and the type of splint that will work best for you.

Impressions

Most impressions can be obtained using our digital intraoral scanner. However, there may be cases where traditional alginate impressions may be needed. We will also do a series of exercises where we manipulate your jaw to assess the state of your joints. This gives us information about the state of your joint and the type of appliance that would better address your symptoms.

Fitting and Adjustments

Once the mouthguard is ready, your dentist will place the mouthguard in your mouth to ensure proper fitting and make the necessary adjustments to the splint before you leave the office. You will also receive accessories and homecare instructions for long-lasting, durable wear. Follow up appointments are usually necessary to assess the progress of the splint therapy and to make necessary adjustments.

Usually mouthguards are the first step towards a more definitive treatment like dental restorations or bite/occlusal equilibration. Depending on your case, you may need to use your mouthguard only for a few months before moving to the next phase of treatment, but there are cases where patients may need to wear it for a longer period of time.

Yes. Mouthguards endure nightly wear and tear and will eventually need to be repaired or replaced. It is common for your teeth to shift over time, so an annual visit to ensure your night guard is properly aligning is suggested. If you notice any cracks, tears, or deformations, contact your dentist to replace your mouthguard.

Chronic stress can cause jaw muscles to tighten during sleep. If this persistent clenching and grinding go untreated, it can erode the enamel, compromise the integrity of your teeth, and cause excruciating pain. This is where night guards come in. A custom-made night guard will protect your teeth from touching each other and wearing down the enamel, preventing further harm on your teeth and jaw.
